CLIENT NEEDS

For this particular product, Kaliber wished to create a product that did not exist on Amazon as of yet: a unicorn play tent. They wanted to be the first to offer a unicorn themed tent, fort or teepee, so they asked me to create original illustrations to decorate the product. It needs to be bright, eye-catching, rainbow-colored, fantasy-themed and appealing to young children.

Given my background in illustration, and my repertoire of children's book-esque imagery, this project was a great fit for me, not to mention the fact that I played "unicorn" with my friends as a child on the regular. It was a natural fit for me.

This being my first foray into product design, I made sure to double check the measurements and die lines for the tent design, which I received from the factory where it would be produced in China. I accounted for the area of bleed to ensure that the important elements of the design would not be cropped. I chose Pantone colors from a color book, being sure to check the colors in various tones of light, in order to choose colors that would work well together.

To create the original artwork, I tapped into my fine art background and pulled on my traditional drawing skills to ensure that my unicorn illustrations were anatomically correct. To create the final artwork, I used my tablet in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator to create perfect-yet-organic vector lines.

After the designs were approved by the creative team and CEO at Kaliber Global, the designs were off to the factory in China. They produced a sample, which they sent back to the office. The first sample showed room for improvement, so I made the necessary changes to the design. Another sample was produced and sent to us, which was satisfactory, so the tent went into production.

While we waited for the product to ship to our warehouses, we went to work creating the listing images for Amazon. Being that we had yet to order lifestyle photography for this product, some photo-compositing was required.
